As Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism sector continues to expand and passenger volumes climb steadily, the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority has launched a priority initiative to upgrade core infrastructure at V.C. Bird International Airport, moving forward with plans to purchase two new baggage-handling units. The project is designed to tackle long-standing operational challenges that have long plagued baggage processing, especially during the busiest peak travel seasons when congestion and delays are most common.
During a formal presentation to the nation’s Cabinet this Wednesday, newly appointed Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer Kurt Menal shared the latest update on the upgrade project. He confirmed that a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) for the new equipment is already being advanced to potential vendors, kicking off the formal procurement process.
The addition of two new units is expected to bring transformative improvements to airport operations. A key benefit of the expanded fleet is enhanced system redundancy: if one unit experiences an unexpected mechanical failure or operational issue, the second unit can step in to maintain steady baggage processing. This built-in backup will drastically cut the risk of widespread, long-lasting disruptions that can ruin passenger travel plans and damage the airport’s reputation.
Airport officials have classified the procurement as a top-priority project due to its far-reaching positive impacts, which extend beyond just smoother baggage handling.
