Nearly three months after financial irregularities at Louisiana Government School in Orange Walk Town were first exposed by local media, Belize’s Ministry of Education has announced the completion of a formal audit into thousands of dollars that have gone missing from the public school’s institutional accounts. Officials are now in the process of identifying which individuals, if any, should face accountability for the apparent financial discrepancies.
The investigation was launched in June 2026, after independent outlet News Five published a report that first flagged inconsistencies in the school’s financial records. Education Minister Francis Fonseca confirmed the audit’s conclusion in a recent update, noting that he had received a formal briefing on the outcome from both the Chief Education Officer and the school’s general manager.
“From the last briefing I received from the Chief Education Officer and the general manager, I can confirm the audit is done, and they are preparing to hold consultations with multiple relevant stakeholders, including the school principal, the bursar, and other finance department staff,” Fonseca shared in his statement. “I have not yet been updated on whether those meetings have taken place, but I can confirm the ministry is moving forward with follow-up procedures. Our goal is to ensure that if any misappropriation of public funds did occur, every party involved will be held fully responsible for their actions.”
To date, the Ministry of Education has not made any of the audit’s formal findings available to the general public. Minister Fonseca also declined to share a specific timeline for when the accountability meetings will be concluded, or when any disciplinary or legal action stemming from the audit results could be announced.
