On a routine workday at a road construction site in Belize’s Cotton Tree Village, a brazen midday shooting has left 23-year-old Unitedville resident Kareem Garcia dead, deepening growing public alarm over a recent surge of violent bloodshed across the Cayo District.
According to official police statements, Garcia was working alongside multiple crew members on August 31, 2026, as part of infrastructure projects overseen by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Development and Housing (MIDH), when two unidentified men rode into the site on a motorcycle. One of the two men pulled a firearm and fired multiple rounds directly at Garcia before the pair fled the scene on two wheels. Emergency response teams pronounced Garcia dead at the scene of the attack.
Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, staff officer for the Cayo District police force, outlined the early progress of the investigation in an on-record interview with local reporters. “What has been learnt so far in the course of this investigation is that Garcia was along with coworkers in Cotton Tree Village when he was approached by two male persons on a motorcycle and one of those male persons produced a firearm and fired several shots at Mr. Garcia fatally injuring him,” Smith confirmed.
When pressed on what could have motivated the targeted public attack, Smith acknowledged that investigators have yet to pin down a clear driving force. She did, however, confirm that Garcia was already known to law enforcement and had an open criminal case pending before the local courts.
The shooting comes just days after a double homicide that left one man identified as Mr. Hyde dead in the nearby town of Santa Elena, a killing that has already stoked community fears of escalating gang or drug-related violence in the region. When asked if investigators had confirmed a direct link between the Cotton Tree shooting and the Santa Elena double murder, Smith noted that the inquiry remains in its earliest phases.
“ It is a very young investigation. We have not been able to establish a nexus between these incidents,” Smith said. “However, we are cognizant of the factors at play in that area in relation to the sale of drugs. That is angle being pursued. However we have no conclusive position so far.”
Community leaders have echoed growing concerns that the string of deadly attacks signals a worsening violence crisis in the Cayo District, with residents calling on law enforcement to step up patrols and speed up investigations to prevent further bloodshed. As of this report, no suspects have been taken into custody, and police are urging any members of the public with information about the motorcycle or the attackers to come forward to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
