On a Saturday afternoon in August 2026, a deadly head-on collision on the Philip Goldson Highway near Mile 27 has claimed the life of a long-serving Belizean police officer, and triggered official legal action against the driver of the passenger vehicle involved.
Authorities confirmed Tuesday that a notice of intended prosecution (NIP) has been formally served to the driver of the Ford Explorer that collided with the motorcycle driven by Police Constable Armando Toledano. In a media briefing, Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith updated reporters on the ongoing investigation, noting that the driver has complied fully with investigative procedures, providing a urine sample for testing and cooperating with all inquiries from law enforcement.
The incident unfolded as PC Toledano rode his Lifan motorcycle southbound from Orange Walk, heading toward Belize City, when the collision occurred with the oncoming Ford Explorer. The 24-year veteran of the Belize Police Department was assigned to the Raccoon Street Police Station at the time of his death.
Addressing questions surrounding the officer’s posting arrangement, Smith clarified that the department works proactively to minimize travel burdens for its personnel, either by stationing officers as close to their home communities as possible or arranging official transportation for work travel. She added, however, that operational needs dictate that the majority of the department’s staffing must be concentrated in the Eastern Division covering Belize City. Department policy also requires avoiding stationing officers in communities where they have overly close personal ties, to prevent conflicts of interest and maintain operational integrity, she explained.
The investigation into the exact cause of the crash remains ongoing as authorities continue to review evidence from the collision site.
