Law enforcement operations carried out in two separate communities in Belize – Santa Elena and Punta Gorda – have resulted in the arrest and formal charging of two local men on drug trafficking-related offenses, with authorities seizing multiple batches of suspected illicit narcotics in both cases.
The first arrest took place shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, when officers from the Santa Elena Police Department stopped and searched 24-year-old Santa Elena resident Christopher Bolon. During the search, officers uncovered 5.9 grams of suspected cocaine concealed on Bolon’s person, leading to his immediate detention. He has been formally charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to supply, a offense that carries significant legal penalties under Belizean drug laws.
A second, unrelated case unfolded a day earlier, on Friday, August 7, when police executed a court-authorized search warrant at the Punta Gorda Town residence of 59-year-old Mark Lopez. During the systematic search of the property, officers located two separate stashes of suspected crack cocaine, weighing 10.97 grams and 6.66 grams respectively. Lopez was taken into custody at the scene and now faces two separate counts of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply to another person.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith confirmed the details of both cases during a regularly scheduled press briefing held on Tuesday, noting that both men have been processed through the booking system and are scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges against them. Smith emphasized that these two arrests are part of an ongoing, proactive campaign by local law enforcement to disrupt illicit drug networks, curb street-level drug distribution, and reduce the negative social and public safety impacts of the illegal drug trade in southern Belize.
As investigations into both cases continue, police have indicated they are working to trace the source of the seized narcotics and identify any additional individuals connected to the alleged drug activities.
