As summer sports programming for youth enters its final stretch in Belize City, more than 100 young boys and girls are gearing up to showcase two weeks of dedicated training at the annual Peewee Basketball Camp closing event. Scheduled for Wednesday evening, July 29, the finale will be hosted at the SCA Auditorium, where camp participants will take center court for exhibition matches to demonstrate the new basketball fundamentals, teamwork skills, and tactical training they have picked up over the course of the program.
Beyond the young athletes’ on-court displays, the event will also include a highly anticipated friendly exhibition matchup between Belize City council members and participating campers’ parents, adding a lighthearted, community-focused element to the evening’s lineup. Belize City Council Programs Manager Michael Fritz shared that the closing celebration serves two key purposes: it honors the significant progress each young camper has made throughout the two-week program, while also raising critical funds for the council’s annual back-to-school drive, an initiative that supports local students heading into the new academic year.
The peewee campers have trained under the guidance of experienced head coach Roscoe Rhys, alongside seasoned players from the Belize City Council Dragons team. Fritz explained that the program has focused on building both individual technical skills and core team values, and the closing exhibition gives young athletes a well-earned chance to share their achievements with family and community members while enjoying the sport they have practiced over the summer.
As part of the closing ceremony, every participating camper will receive a completion certificate and a complimentary school bag provided by the Belize City Council. The camp experience does not have to mark the end of youth engagement with the council, either: the organization offers year-round programming through its Youth Connect Student Hub series, which provides free access to homework assistance, one-on-one tutoring, and mentorship for local young people outside of the summer months.
This peewee basketball camp is just one of several child-focused summer programs hosted by the Belize City Council this year. The organization also runs complementary summer programming for children interested in yoga and academic enrichment, expanding access to recreational and learning opportunities for youth across the community.
