According to ASP Stacy Smith, a staff officer leading the investigative effort, the incident began when members of the GI3 Unit attempted to pull over a vehicle connected to an ongoing investigation. Rather than comply with the officers’ order to stop, the driver accelerated away, triggering a fast-paced chase through the area. The pursuit reached its climax when the suspect vehicle lost control and crashed into a public lamppost, forcing all three occupants to flee on foot.
As the front-seat passenger exited the wrecked vehicle, the individual pulled a firearm and opened fire on the responding GI3 officers, Smith confirmed. Law enforcement returned fire in response, but all three suspects were still able to slip away from the scene before additional backup could arrive to secure the perimeter.
