St. Kitts Electricity Department (SKELEC) has announced that its ambitious islandwide Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meter upgrade initiative is continuing to progress across residential and commercial communities across the country. The official public notice, posted to SKELEC’s official platform on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 at 10:42 PM, urges all customers to verify the pre-published installation schedule to confirm when authorized upgrade teams will be conducting work in their local neighborhood.
The ongoing AMI replacement project is designed to replace aging analog metering infrastructure with digitally connected smart meters, which deliver a range of benefits for both the utility provider and its customer base. Smart meters enable real-time energy consumption tracking, eliminate the need for manual on-site meter reads, support more accurate and transparent billing, and give customers greater control over their energy usage to reduce monthly costs. SKELEC first announced the islandwide upgrade program earlier in 2026, and has been rolling out installations in phases across different regions to minimize service disruption for residents.
The utility has reminded customers that all installation teams will carry official SKELEC identification, and customers can verify the timing of their meter swap by checking the updated schedule posted on SKELEC’s official website and local community notice boards. A separate customer notice from SKELEC covering additional program details was published 48 hours prior to this latest update, providing customers with more context about eligibility, the installation process, and post-upgrade support. Officials from the utility have noted that the full rollout is on track to be completed by the end of 2026, pending no unexpected supply chain or scheduling delays.
