Guns, ganja seized

On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Guyana’s Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) announced a major law enforcement operation that yielded one of the recent larger illicit drug and weapons hauls in the capital region. Acting on intelligence, CANU agents targeted a residential property on Princes Street, located in the Lodge neighborhood of Georgetown, the country’s capital.

During the search of the premises, law enforcement officers recovered a substantial stockpile of contraband: 86 separate parcels of imported marijuana with a total weight of 98.32 pounds, valued at approximately 80 million Guyanese dollars. Alongside the narcotics, investigators also seized an arsenal of illegal firearms, including four semi-automatic pistols and one rifle.

In a statement following the raid, CANU confirmed that two Guyanese men were taken into custody at the scene, and are currently being held for interrogation in connection with the suspected trafficking operation. The agency has not yet released further details about the identities of the arrestees, or whether investigators believe the network is connected to larger cross-border drug trafficking operations operating in the region.

The seizure underscores ongoing efforts by Guyana’s anti-narcotics agencies to crack down on the illicit flow of controlled substances and illegal weapons into the country, particularly as transnational criminal networks continue to target Caribbean nations as transit hubs for drug trafficking bound for North American and European markets.
