ABHTA Chair: Antigua Should Pursue Quality, Not Quantity, in Tourism Growth

Antigua and Barbuda must shift its tourism strategy to prioritize high-spending visitors and emphasize quality over quantity to ensure the industry’s long-term sustainability, according to Craig Marshall, Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association (ABHTA). Speaking on the government’s weekly program ‘Government in Motion,’ Marshall highlighted that the nation’s tourism sector has matured to a point where growth should be evaluated not just by visitor numbers but by the economic value generated. He stressed that Antigua and Barbuda’s identity as a luxury destination should be embraced, with efforts made to distribute tourism benefits more broadly across communities. Marshall noted that the island’s primary markets, the United States and the United Kingdom, have shown steady growth of 6% and 4%, respectively. However, he emphasized that the focus should remain on delivering exceptional experiences rather than pursuing mass tourism. The government’s recent initiatives, such as reopening the Barbuda International Airport and securing new airlift agreements, aim to bolster high-end, sustainable tourism. Additionally, training programs led by the Ministry of Tourism and the Antigua and Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute are equipping local workers to meet international standards. Marshall also underscored the importance of investing in human capital and environmental stewardship to maintain the islands’ luxury appeal. He pointed out that modern travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences that blend comfort, culture, and sustainability. ‘Every aspect of the visitor experience, from our people and service to our natural environment, must reflect quality,’ Marshall said. ‘That’s what will keep Antigua and Barbuda ahead.’

Antigua Features Prominently in New Historical Novel on Kalinago Leader Indian Warner

Clement Richards, a Caribbean cultural activist and writer, has unveiled his debut novel, ‘Indian Warner: Son of Two Worlds,’ a compelling historical narrative that delves into the life of Thomas ‘Indian’ Warner. Born to a Kalinago mother and an English father, Warner’s story is a poignant exploration of identity, survival, and the clash of empires in the 17th-century Caribbean. The novel is set against the backdrop of Waitukubuli (Dominica) and the contested waters of the Eastern Caribbean, blending rich historical detail with vivid storytelling. Richards’ prose brings to life the resilience of the Kalinago people and their resistance to colonial invaders, while also shedding light on the betrayal that led to Warner’s tragic death at the hands of his brother, Philip Warner. The book traces Warner’s journey from his birth in St. Kitts to his rise as Chief of the Kalinago tribe in Dominica, culminating in his murder and the subsequent genocide that marked the region. Richards’ work is not just a historical account but also an act of remembrance, restoring dignity to marginalized voices in colonial records. The novel is set to be released in paperback on October 23, 2025, followed by an audio book narrated by Raymond Lawrence, a former Chief Cultural Officer of Dominica. Richards hopes the book will resonate with Caribbean readers as a celebration of cultural memory while offering global audiences a deeper understanding of the region’s complex history. The novel is available for pre-order on Amazon, with the first 100 customers receiving a special gift. • High Surf Advisory Issued for Antigua as Northern Swells Batter Coastlines

High Surf Advisory Issued for Antigua as Northern Swells Batter Coastlines

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for Antigua and several other islands in the northern Leewards, warning of hazardous sea conditions caused by strong swells from the north. The advisory, initially announced at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, will remain in effect until Thursday afternoon for Antigua, with neighboring islands such as Barbuda, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands under alert until Thursday evening. The Met Service reported that long-period swells of up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) are combining with surf heights reaching 10 feet (3 meters), resulting in dangerous rip currents and pounding surf along northern and north-facing coastlines. Authorities have cautioned beachgoers and mariners to exercise extreme vigilance, as the rough conditions could lead to coastal flooding and beach erosion in vulnerable areas. Residents are advised to avoid exposed beaches, refrain from venturing onto rocks and jetties, and only swim in areas monitored by lifeguards. The swells, with periods ranging between 10 and 11 seconds, are attributed to distant storm activity in the North Atlantic, which transmits wave energy over long distances. The advisory extends to St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands, with impacts varying based on coastline exposure. Marine operators and small craft users are urged to stay updated on conditions, as sea states may worsen before improving later in the week.
