WFP Gives Agriculture Ministry a Vehicle for Tilapia Hatchery Work

On November 5, 2026, a formal handover ceremony was held at the Central Farm Tilapia Hatchery Center, where the World Food Programme (WFP) officially transferred a 2017 Mitsubishi Pajero utility vehicle to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries’ specialized Aquaculture Unit. The Aquaculture Unit, which manages the Central Farm tilapia hatchery facility, carries out two core mandates: first, breeding and distributing high-quality tilapia fingerlings to local fish farmers to expand sustainable aquaculture production, and second, running targeted educational programs for K-12 schools and youth community organizations to teach practical aquaculture skills and raise awareness of long-term food security. Prior to this donation, the unit faced logistical barriers that limited its ability to travel between the hatchery, remote farm sites, and off-site educational events, slowing down fingerling distribution schedules and restricting outreach coverage. During the handover event, Agriculture Minister Rodwell Ferguson expressed sincere appreciation for WFP’s targeted support, noting that the new vehicle would eliminate persistent logistical gaps in the unit’s daily operations, streamline hatchery management workflows, and allow staff to expand their reach to more rural communities and youth groups across the country. WFP Country Representative Tony Spence emphasized that the donation aligns with the global UN agency’s core mission to strengthen local food system resilience, highlighting the Aquaculture Unit’s proven track record of empowering young people to participate in sustainable food production. Spence added that the WFP is prepared to continue collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture to advance broader national food security and sustainable agricultural development initiatives in the coming years.
