Shane Deitz ends tenure as West Indies Women’s head coach

A landmark transitional shift is unfolding for the West Indies Women’s Senior Cricket Program, as Cricket West Indies (CWI) formalizes the end of Australian head coach Shane Deitz’s tenure to pave the way for a fresh leadership phase for the Maroon Warriors. The governing body made the official announcement in a Tuesday morning public release, confirming that Deitz, a former first-class cricketer, has exited the organization by mutual consent, with his departure formally taking effect on October 31, 2026.

Appointed to the top role in July 2023, Deitz oversaw a period of unprecedented consistent high performance for the women’s squad, steering the side to back-to-back semi-final berths at the 2024 and 2026 editions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, a milestone that has set a new competitive benchmark for the regional women’s cricket setup.

Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, lauded Deitz’s transformative impact on the growth and competitiveness of the women’s game across the Caribbean, clarifying that the separation process was initiated at the coach’s personal request. “Shane delivered the team to two consecutive World Cup semi-finals, and that is now the non-negotiable standard this group of athletes holds itself to. We owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for laying that foundation. He shared his personal future plans with our leadership team, and we collectively agreed that a smooth, timely handover at this juncture was in the best long-term interest of the squad’s ongoing development,” Bascombe noted in his official remarks.

Stepping into the interim head coaching role for the upcoming bilateral series against Pakistan is Andre Coley, the highly respected former West Indies Men’s Test Head Coach. Coley will operate alongside the full existing support staff that has been working with the women’s squad to ensure minimal disruption to the team’s preparation and match rhythm. As confirmed in CWI’s official public statement, Coley remains a core, high-value member of the broader West Indies cricket coaching ecosystem, and has continued to make significant contributions to the regional High-Performance Programme, including leading the West Indies Men’s A-Team through a full competitive cycle last year. CWI officials have indicated that additional details regarding the permanent long-term head coaching appointment for the women’s senior team will be shared with stakeholders and the public in the coming weeks as the formal recruitment process moves forward.
