High Street Magistrates’ Court announces temporary closures

Official administrative notices from the Antigua and Barbuda court system, released by Court Administrator Rhohan Frederick, have outlined two upcoming operational adjustments for the central Magistrates’ Court facility located on High Street in the capital city of St. John’s. First, the High Street Magistrates’ Court will cease all public-facing operations at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, to enable all on-site non-essential court staff to attend a scheduled staff member’s funeral, a compassionate arrangement approved to support court personnel during a period of collective bereavement. The second, full-day closure will take place on Tuesday, November 3, a public service adjustment aligned with security and logistical requirements tied to the hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) across parts of the capital. For all members of the public with pre-scheduled court appearances, hearings, filings, or other administrative matters assigned to the High Street Magistrates’ Court on November 3, the official directive requires all affected parties to appear at their originally assigned courtroom on Thursday, November 5, instead, with no additional rescheduling paperwork required to retain their original case slot. Critically, the temporary closures do not extend to the separate Magistrates’ Court Family Division, which operates out of the High Court complex on Parliament Drive in St. John’s. The Family Division will maintain its regular full operating hours across both affected dates, with no disruptions to scheduled family law hearings, child custody proceedings, support case management, or related public services.
