Guyana wint Inter-Guyanese Spelen; Suriname eindigt als derde

On October 26, official final results confirmed Guyana as the overall champion of the 2026 Inter-Guyanese Spelen (IGS), a regional annual multi-sport event tailored for student-athletes across three neighboring South American territories: Guyana, French Guiana, and host nation Suriname. After three consecutive days of fiercely contested competition that kicked off on Friday, October 23 under the official theme “Building Nation Through School Sport”, Guyana secured the top spot in the overall medal standings with a commanding total of 475 cumulative points. French Guiana finished in the runner-up position with 444 points, while host Suriname landed in third place with 431 points following a tightly fought race that saw narrow gaps separating the top three finishers. The multi-day sporting spectacle drew hundreds of teenage participants who competed across a diverse lineup of disciplines: traditional core events including track and field, basketball, volleyball, swimming, chess, and futsal were joined by two newly introduced demonstration sports for this 2026 edition, boxing and judo, to expand athletic opportunities for attending youth. The 2026 iteration of the long-running regional games was formally closed on Sunday, October 25 during an official awards ceremony held at Suriname’s Anthony Nesty Sports Hall, marking the conclusion of a week of athletic achievement and cross-cultural exchange. Far more than a competitive sports tournament, the Inter-Guyanese Games were established with dual core missions: to elevate athletic performance among young regional talent, and to deepen long-standing people-to-people ties between the three participating territories. For the participating student athletes, the event serves as a rare low-barrier platform to gain formal international competitive experience, engage directly with peers from neighboring communities to learn about each other’s cultural traditions, and build critical life skills including personal discipline, self-confidence, and collaborative team spirit. Organizers confirmed during the closing ceremony that French Guiana will take over hosting responsibilities for the 2027 edition of the Inter-Guyanese Spelen, continuing the annual regional tradition.
