As severe thunderstorms and heavy downpours sweep across sections of Barbados, communities and drivers in the western region of the island nation are on high alert for potential flash flooding and widespread travel disruptions.
The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) formally issued the urgent weather alert on Thursday afternoon, forecasting that western and northwestern administrative districts will see accumulated rainfall between one and three inches over the warning period.
Meteorologists have highlighted that excess rainwater runoff from higher elevation areas is likely to trigger inundation of low-lying roadways and areas at the base of hillsides. Beyond flooding, the unstable soil conditions brought on by heavy saturation also raise the risk of landslips and widespread soil erosion in vulnerable zones across the warned area.
The alert is scheduled to remain active until 6 p.m. local time, though officials note that the warning may be lifted earlier if weather conditions improve more rapidly than expected.
Authorities are urging all members of the public to adhere strictly to public safety guidance issued by the Department of Emergency Management, and to stay tuned to official weather channels for continuous updates on changing conditions.
