Leisure : Did you know ? #69

Local Haitian digital platform HaitiLibre has released the 69th edition of its popular twice-weekly knowledge quiz series “Did You Know?”, this week shining a spotlight on one of Haiti’s most recognizable historic landmarks: Port-au-Prince’s downtown Iron Market, also commonly referred to as the Hyppolite Market.

Inaugurated in the late 1800s during the presidential administration of Florvil Hyppolite, the Iron Market stands out for its striking signature bright red cast iron framework and distinctive Moorish-style minarets. Few visitors know the unexpected origin of the market’s core structures: the metal frames were originally manufactured to build a new railway station in Cairo, Egypt, before being purchased and shipped across the Atlantic to Port-au-Prince to be repurposed into a bustling central public market, resulting in a one-of-a-kind commercial and architectural space unlike any other in the Caribbean.
Beyond its daily role as a gathering place where vendors sell handicrafts, traditional Haitian goods, local food products, and ceremonial items for Haitian Vodou traditions, the Iron Market is far more than just a market. It is a powerful symbol of the cultural resilience of the Haitian people. The site has been rebuilt twice in modern history: first after a devastating fire destroyed the original structure in 2008, then again following the catastrophic 2010 earthquake that leveled much of Port-au-Prince’s city center. Today, it remains the beating heart of downtown Port-au-Prince’s commercial activity and a touchstone of the capital’s collective national memory.

This fun educational fact is pulled from the answer fact sheets that accompany HaitiLibre’s growing library of online general knowledge quizzes, which cover topics from Haitian history and culture to global current events and general trivia. The platform continues to expand its quiz offerings on a regular cadence: as part of its monthly content update on October 1, 2026, 30 brand new quizzes were added to the platform, bringing the total number of available quizzes to 270. Each quiz includes 10 individual questions, and the platform is on track to hit 300 total quizzes in the near future.
All of HaitiLibre’s exclusive quiz content is 100% free to access and requires no account registration to play, making it accessible to curious learners of all backgrounds.
