A major administrative mix-up at a Suriname police detention facility has come to a neat close after a 42-year-old suspect who was accidentally released from custody last week turned himself in voluntarily on Monday morning. Police department spokesperson confirmed that Cecilson Jurgen Raymond, the wrongfully freed detainee, reported to the Geyersvlijt police station of his own accord and has since been taken back into official custody.
Raymond was originally being held pending proceedings linked to a narcotics trafficking case with ties to a structured criminal organization. The accidental release stemmed from a case of mistaken identity between two detainees held at the same facility, according to preliminary information released by law enforcement. Authorities had intended to release another detainee, Cecilson Armanai Rihanna, who was also detained at the Geyersvlijt station, but released Raymond in his place by error.
As soon as the blunder was uncovered by police personnel, a manhunt was launched to locate Raymond and take him back into custody. That search concluded successfully once the suspect presented himself at the station to turn himself in. To date, law enforcement officials have not released any further details about how the identity mix-up occurred, nor what specific systemic or procedural gaps allowed the wrongful release to happen in the first place.
