Days before he turns 19, a young cricket star from Saint Lucia has reached a major milestone in his career: 18-year-old opening batsman Theo Edward has earned his first ever professional contract with the Windward Islands Volcanoes. The deal comes as the franchise unveiled its 15-player roster for the 2027 regional first-class cricket season, marking an historic new chapter for the Volcanoes, which launched in 2014 and will host its full annual operations in Saint Lucia for the first time this cycle.
Edward is one of four Saint Lucian players named to the final squad, joining fast bowlers McKenny Clarke and Keon Gaston, and all-rounder Shadrack Descarte. All local players will now train, condition, and prepare for upcoming fixtures at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, Saint Lucia’s premier international cricket venue.
The teenage batsman’s contract offer comes as a reward for his consistent standout performances across domestic youth and senior competitions over the past year. As captain of the Windward Islands Under-19 side, Edward finished second in the overall run standings at the 2026 Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 Championship, piling up 217 runs across the tournament. Later that year, in the senior Windward Islands three-day championship held in July, Edward notched the only century of the entire tournament, scoring an unbeaten 118 against the Dominica representative side. This breakout performance follows his first major career statement back in 2022, when he hit back-to-back centuries to lead Saint Lucia to the title at the Winlott Windward Islands Boys Under-15 tournament.
Clarke, a product of the West Indies Cricket Academy who featured in the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup, is set to rejoin the Volcanoes squad alongside Gaston; both fast bowlers previously represented the franchise in the 2025 Super50 limited-overs campaign. Grenadian twin brothers Kirt and Kirtsen Murray also retained their contracts after delivering strong results in the 2026 Windward Islands Senior Men’s Championship. Rounding out the full contracted squad are batsmen Kenneth Dember, Sunil Ambris, Teddy Bishop, Alick Athanaze, all-rounders Ryan John, Darron Nedd, Stephan Pascal, Jervin Benjamin, and pace bowler Gilon Tyson.
The 2027 roster has been constructed to balance promising emerging young talent from across the Windward Islands with seasoned players who hold senior international experience. Sunil Ambris, the team’s veteran anchor, has scored more than 3,200 first-class runs for the Windwards throughout his career, while Alick Athanaze brings his experience as a regular in the West Indies men’s national side to the young group.
The franchise’s new leadership cycle under a first-time head coach will officially kick off on November 1, when all squad members will report to Saint Lucia for mandatory fitness testing and physical performance assessments. The Volcanoes’ primary goal for the 2027 season will be claiming the title of the West Indies Championship, which will once again use its existing 12-match bilateral series competition structure for the upcoming campaign.
