Gros Islet reign as Super 50 champs

In a gripping day-night finale at Mindoo Phillip Park on Saturday, a devastating batting combination from former West Indies Under-19 captain Kimani Melius and tournament-leading run-maker Jard Goodman propelled Gros Islet to a six-wicket triumph over South Castries, securing the 202X Super 50 Men’s Tournament crown.

South Castries skipper Johnson Charles won the coin toss and opted to set a target for the northern-based side, posting a formidable 289 for 8 from their allotted overs. The total fell just 11 runs short of their own preliminary-round high against Mon Repos at Wenn Playing Field, marking one of the highest scores of the entire tournament.

Tonius Simon delivered a captain’s knock to anchor South Castries’ innings, remaining unbeaten on 101 off solid strokeplay that included 10 boundaries and two maximums. Royce Paul provided crucial middle-order support, chipping in with 72 runs to build a match-defining 119-run partnership with Simon. Opener Ephron Charles was the only other batter to make a significant contribution, adding 45 runs to the final total.

Gros Islet’s bowling attack shared the workload evenly to restrict South Castries just shy of the 300-run mark. Tournament-leading wicket-taker Isaiah Jones picked up 2 for 39, while Tyrel Chicot claimed 2 for 40. In a memorable birthday performance, all-rounder Tarrique Edward took 2 for 57, with Darvin Forde and Lee John each chipping in with one wicket apiece to wrap up the innings.

Gros Islet entered the chase as the form side for high run chases, having already posted scores of 323 for 8 and 273 all out throughout the tournament – the latter coming against the same South Castries side at the same Mindoo Phillip Park venue.

True to their reputation, Gros Islet surpassed the 290-run target in just 29.5 overs, finishing on 292 for 4. Melius led the charge from the front, remaining undefeated on a brutal 127 runs scored off only 76 deliveries. His innings included five fours and 12 sixes, setting a new tournament record for the highest individual score.

Goodman continued his stellar tournament form, compiling 82 runs off 62 balls with six fours and seven sixes. The pair got off to a flying start early on: Goodman and Windward Islands wicketkeeper Noelle Leo put on 75 runs for the first wicket in only 6.3 overs before Leo fell for a quickfire 31 off 21 balls.

Melius then joined Goodman at the crease, putting on a devastating 151-run partnership off just 87 balls that brought Gros Islet to the brink of victory. With 13 runs still required from the final over, Melius carefully rotated the strike to steer his side across the finish line. Additional late contributions from Khan Elcock (11) and Dominic Auguste (6) helped lock in the win.

Simeon Gerson was South Castries’ most successful bowler, picking up three wickets for 60 runs, but his efforts were not enough to curb Gros Islet’s aggressive batting charge. The title win adds to Gros Islet’s recent regional success, coming shortly after the side claimed the regional two-day championship earlier this the season.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Goodman topped the run-scoring charts with a total of 363 runs across all matches, finishing well clear of second-placed Ephron Charles who ended with 305 runs. On the bowling side, Jones finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 15 scalps, narrowly edging out teammate Tarrique Edward who claimed 14 wickets total.
