A well-respected former educator and cultural steward from Belize’s Lake Independence community is facing a life-threatening health crisis, prompting his family to issue a urgent public call for financial support to cover his mounting medical bills. 71-year-old Sebastian Cayetano, a figure deeply embedded in the social and cultural fabric of his region, has been battling a chronic heart condition for nearly five years, and recent complications have drastically worsened his prognosis.
Isani Cayetano, Sebastian’s son and a local news director, shared the details of his father’s declining health in a public appeal, explaining that the initially diagnosed enlarged heart has progressively worsened with age. What began as a manageable chronic illness took an alarming turn in recent weeks: after an initial hospital discharge failed to resolve Sebastian’s persistent symptoms, the family sought further testing at the Belize Medical Associates, where clinicians discovered that his kidneys are now failing.
This new development has placed dangerous additional strain on Sebastian’s heart and circulatory system, turning a planned discharge into an urgent health crisis. According to Isani, the family has already exhausted all of their personal financial resources covering years of medical care, leaving them with no other option but to turn to the community that his father spent decades serving.
Sebastian Cayetano’s legacy stretches far beyond his immediate family. A career educator who taught thousands of Belizean children who now hold prominent roles across the country, he has also dedicated much of his life to preserving and promoting Garifuna cultural heritage, a role that has made him a central figure at the local Garifuna Museum. For more than 50 years, he has also been an active community leader as a justice of the peace and a core member of the St. Martin’s Parish community, touching countless lives across generations.
“Death is inevitable for all of us, we do not seek to escape that truth,” Isani shared in his heartfelt appeal. “But if there is any path to ease my father’s suffering and give him more time with the community he loves, any assistance would mean more than we can say. For all whose lives he has shaped as a teacher, a leader and a friend, we humbly ask you to stand with us now.”
