BLP promises “honest conversations” at annual conference

Eight months after securing victory at the polls, the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) is shifting gears from electoral celebration to actionable planning, with its 87th Annual Conference set to kick off next weekend at St George Secondary School. The three-day gathering, convened under the theme “Building Beyond the Victory”, will center on open, two-way conversations between party leadership, elected representatives and the voters who put the BLP in power, marking a departure from traditional political convention pageantry.

Speaking at a press briefing this Thursday, Toni Moore — who serves dual roles as BLP Conference Chair and Member of Parliament for St George North — outlined that the event will prioritize collaborative dialogue rather than self-congratulation. “We will not only be speaking to the people, [but] we’ll be speaking with them,” Moore emphasized, noting that discussions will include input from party leadership, sitting MPs, and constituency and parliamentary support staff. Rejecting the focus on reliving the excitement of the BLP’s electoral win eight months prior, she added that the core goal of the conference is to map out clear pathways to deliver on the party’s campaign promises. “It is about how we are going to deliver on what people expect from us — how we are going to deliver our services in a way that people can see and feel, in a tangible way, that there is a difference and that they are benefiting from it,” Moore said.

A key item on the conference agenda is forward-looking youth-focused policy, led by the party’s youth wing, the League of Young Socialists. League President Kimar Hinds announced that the group will table a formal resolution covering two critical national priorities: upgrading Barbados’ aging core infrastructure and establishing clear frameworks for the responsible, transparent governance of artificial intelligence.

Beyond policy discussions, the conference will feature a high-profile honors ceremony to recognize more than 40 individuals and teams that have made outstanding contributions to the BLP and national life of Barbados. BLP CEO Pat Parris detailed that the awards will celebrate excellence across party branches and the wider national community. Thirty-two long-serving party stalwarts will receive recognition, with one honoree coming from each of the BLP’s 30 constituency branches, plus additional representatives from the party’s Women’s League and League of Young Socialists. Ten private individuals will also be honored for exceptional contributions to national sports, while two standout national youth teams — the Barbados Under-19 Men’s Cricket Team and the Barbados Boys Under-20 4x400m relay squad — will be recognized for their record-breaking performances at the 2026 CARIFTA Games. The ceremony will also present two innovation awards, alongside the party’s most prestigious internal honors: the Sir David Simmons Award, Ermie Bourne Award, Chessel Rock Award, Milroy Reece Award, Chairman’s Award, and the BLP’s highest distinction, the Grantley Adams Award. The honors event will open with a cocktail reception next Friday evening, with the formal awards ceremony scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Parris also used the briefing to pay tribute to outgoing BLP Chairman The Most Honourable Reginald Farley, thanking him for his three years of steady leadership at the helm of the party. Farley will be succeeded by sitting Member of Parliament Kirk Humphrey when the new leadership takes office following the conference. Prime Minister Mia Mottley, the leader of the BLP, is scheduled to deliver the event’s keynote address to close out the three-day gathering.
