In the Dominican Republic’s capital of Santo Domingo, a transformative infrastructure overhaul aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion between the National District and North Santo Domingo is steadily moving forward. Led by the nation’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), the ambitious project on República de Colombia Avenue incorporates a range of critical engineering works designed to reshape regional mobility.
Key components of the development include a new 200-plus-meter viaduct spanning the Arroyo Hondo ravine, ongoing beam installation for the connecting bridge linking to Jacobo Majluta Avenue, and active excavation work for a purpose-built tunnel running beneath the Cuba neighborhood. Construction crews are also digging a connecting trench that will link the new viaduct to Pérez Ricart Avenue, a core element of the broader circulation redesign for the entire corridor.
The full project is segmented into three distinct phases to minimize disruption and streamline construction. The first stretch runs from Duarte Highway to Jacobo Majluta Avenue, the second extends from Jacobo Majluta to Pérez Ricart Avenue, and the final segment will connect through to Los Próceres Avenue. By integrating a network of bridges, elevated viaducts, underground tunnels, and connecting trenches, authorities aim to eliminate long-standing bottlenecks and create a seamless transit route across the capital.
To address immediate traffic concerns during construction, MOPC has already implemented an interim solution: four newly opened functional return lanes between Monumental and Jacobo Majluta avenues. These lanes have already begun cutting wait times during peak commuting hours, especially for drivers traveling into the city from Santo Domingo Oeste.
Once fully completed, the project is projected to deliver tangible benefits to more than one million residents across Greater Santo Domingo. By cutting average travel times and establishing direct, uninterrupted connections between key zones of the metropolitan area, the República de Colombia Avenue transformation is set to support long-term economic activity and improve quality of life for capital residents.
