During a National Day celebration hosted in Santo Domingo on October 12, Spanish Ambassador to the Dominican Republic Lorea Arribalzaga Ceballos announced a landmark economic milestone: Spain has secured its position as the single largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for the Caribbean nation in 2025. The total inflow of Spanish investment reached $1.086 billion this year, accounting for roughly one-fifth of all foreign capital the Dominican Republic has received in 2025.
Ceballos framed the robust investment figures as a clear marker of the strong confidence that Spanish multinational and private sector companies hold in the long-term stability and growth potential of the Dominican economy. Spanish firms have already established a deep footprint across the Dominican Republic’s most strategically important economic sectors, spanning energy production, large-scale infrastructure development, and the country’s world-leading tourism industry, which remains a core driver of national GDP and employment.
Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez further expanded on the strength of bilateral economic ties, noting that total two-way trade between the two nations also surpassed the $1.4 billion threshold in 2025. Víctor Bisonó, the Dominican Republic’s Minister of Industry, Commerce and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, underscored that deepening and expanding the existing economic partnership between the two countries remains a top policy priority for the Dominican government.
Beyond trade and investment, officials from both governments used the celebratory event to highlight longstanding collaboration on development projects and people-to-people ties between their respective migrant communities. The meeting also created space to map out new avenues for future cooperation, with one promising emerging area being joint research initiatives focused on the Dominican Republic’s rare earth element reserves, a critical raw material for global clean energy and technology supply chains.
