On October 7, stakeholders from across Grenada’s sporting, education, and corporate sectors gathered at the Grenada Football Association (GFA) Conference Room to officially launch the 2026 GFA–Beacon Insurance Primary Schools Football Championships, a two-month nationwide grassroots tournament designed to nurture young athletic talent across Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique.
Set to kick off on October 14, the tournament will bring together more than 50 primary schools across two competitive divisions: 54 registered teams in the Boys’ Competition and 51 registered teams in the Girls’ Competition, with the vast majority of participating schools fielding squads in both divisions. For the thousands of young student-athletes taking part, the championship will serve as a foundational organized platform to represent their school communities, hone core football skills, and build long-term engagement with the sport.
The formal launch event brought together a cross-section of key stakeholders, including GFA leadership, senior executives from title sponsor Beacon Insurance, representatives from Grenada’s Ministry of Education, leadership of the Grenada Union of Teachers, participating students and teachers, local media, and other invited partners. The launch program featured opening remarks from key leaders across education, football, and the sponsoring organization, followed by a full breakdown of tournament logistics, the official opening declaration, recitations of the Players’ and Coaches’ Oaths, and a press question-and-answer session.
For the GFA, the primary school championship functions as a critical first step in the country’s national football development ecosystem. By introducing young players to structured competition at an early age, the tournament creates a standardized environment where children can learn the fundamentals of the sport while giving GFA coaches and technical scouts the opportunity to identify emerging talent across every region of the tri-island nation.
Top young players identified through the championship will progress through the GFA’s development pipeline, moving from grassroots community football to local club competition, with standout prospects advancing to the GFA’s formal Talent Development Scheme (TDS). The TDS provides intensive, structured training a minimum of three times per week for selected players in the under-13, under-14, under-15, and under-16 age groups, serving as a critical bridge between early school participation and elite youth development, including future selection for Grenada’s national youth teams.
GFA President Marlon Glean, who delivered opening remarks at the launch, has long prioritized expanding grassroots participation and building out structured player development pathways as core institutional goals for the association. Glean emphasized the foundational role of primary school football in shaping young athletes’ understanding of team sport, saying: “Primary school football is where many young players first begin to understand what it means to train, compete, represent a team and enjoy the game in a structured environment. Through this championship, we are reaching communities across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique and creating opportunities for both boys and girls to become part of the football pathway. We are grateful to Beacon Insurance, the Ministry of Education, the Grenada Union of Teachers and all of the schools, teachers and coaches whose support makes a programme of this scale possible.”
As title sponsor, Beacon Insurance has positioned itself at the heart of a national initiative that connects football to children, families, and local communities across Grenada. Jenny Bertin, Senior Manager of Regional Client Services and Agencies at Beacon Insurance, shared the company’s enthusiasm for supporting youth development through sport in her remarks at the launch. “Beacon Insurance is proud to support an initiative that reaches young people and communities throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Sport has the ability to build confidence, discipline, teamwork and healthy habits, and we are pleased to partner with the GFA in creating opportunities for children to experience those values through football,” Bertin said.
Education sector leaders played a central role in the launch, highlighting the importance of cross-sector collaboration between the GFA and the national education system to make the championship possible. Dr. Dianne Abel Jeffery, Chief Education Officer, Ernest Richardson, Second Vice President of the Grenada Union of Teachers, and Dimeon Castle, Assistant Sports Coordinator, all delivered remarks at the event, emphasizing the critical role that school principals, teachers, coaches, and administrators play in enabling student participation and helping young athletes balance their sporting commitments with academic progress.
The 51 registered teams in the Girls’ Competition mark a notable milestone for gender inclusion in Grenada’s grassroots football ecosystem. The near-equal participation between girls and boys aligns directly with the GFA’s core objective of creating equitable playing opportunities for all young people from the very first stage of the national player development pathway.
George Phillip, Primary School Football Coordinator, delivered the official tournament overview ahead of the formal opening declaration. The launch program’s inclusion of the Players’ and Coaches’ Oaths reinforced the GFA’s commitment to upholding core values of sportsmanship, personal responsibility, and fair play across all matches of the championship.
With the launch complete, all eyes now turn to the tournament’s opening kickoff on October 14. Over the course of the two-month competition, the GFA will not only deliver organized competitive football for thousands of primary school students but also deepen partnerships with schools and local communities, expand equitable access for young players of all genders, and connect the nation’s most promising young talent to the GFA’s broader national development infrastructure.
Far more than just a seasonal school tournament, the 2026 GFA–Beacon Insurance Primary Schools Football Championships form a key building block of a growing, structured national pathway that gives young Grenadian players the resources and opportunities to start, develop, and advance their football careers from primary school all the way to the national team.
