The new Cuban baseball season got underway on opening day, with the league’s defending champions delivering a commanding performance on their home turf at Victoria de Giron Stadium to claim their first win of the campaign. Fueled by 10 total hits, well-timed offensive rallies, and a stifling, dominant pitching display, the Cocodrilos got their title defense off to the perfect start.
Left-handed hurler Yoanni Yera took the mound for the champions, turning in a standout five-inning outing that saw him rack up five strikeouts to earn the decision as the winning pitcher. Islay Sotolongo, the starting pitcher for the opposing side, was tagged with the loss after the Cocodrilos’ offensive outburst.
This 2025 season marks a major structural shift for Cuban baseball, with the entire league split into two geographic conferences: the Western Zone and the Eastern Zone. This opening win is the first critical step for the Cocodrilos as they look to navigate the new format and repeat as champions.
The Western Zone held a full slate of opening day matchups across the country. At Havana’s iconic Latinoamericano Stadium, the Industriales squad earned a 5-1 extra-inning win over Pinar del Rio, with the game-defining play coming from Yasmani Tomas, who crushed a spectacular grand slam in the 10th inning to put the game out of reach. In other Western Zone results, Artemisa secured a comfortable 9-2 victory over La Isla, while Villa Clara staged a late comeback to upend Mayabeque 6-5 after trailing for much of the contest.
Over in the Eastern Zone, four more opening day games delivered clear results for competing clubs. Sancti Spiritus got their season started with a 9-4 win over Camaguey, Ciego de Avila edged out Las Tunas by a narrow 3-2 score, Granma put on an offensive clinic to rout Holguin 14-2, and Santiago de Cuba earned a dominant 11-1 blowout win over Guantanamo.
