The tight-knit cricket community of Saint Lucia is grappling with an unexpected loss following the sudden passing of beloved local player Alvinaus “Mushy” Simon, who died in his sleep early Friday morning. His death comes just one month before he would have celebrated his 33rd birthday, leaving teammates, fans, and colleagues shocked and heartbroken at the news.
A skilled off-spin bowler and dependable middle-order batsman, Simon built a respected reputation across Saint Lucia’s domestic cricket circuit over more than a decade of competitive play. Hailing from Balca in the Choiseul district, he represented his home community in both the annual Prime Minister’s Cup and the Saint Lucia Premier League (SPL) — and this year, he played a key role in guiding his squads to the final of both competitions, marking one of the strongest seasons of his career.
Cricket Saint Lucia, the governing body for the sport on the island, paid tribute to Simon in an official statement posted to its social media channels. The organization remembered Simon as a “quiet and unassuming” athlete who let his performance on the pitch do the talking, a quality that endeared him to teammates and spectators alike.
Simon’s journey in cricket began long before his domestic career. A graduate of Piaye Secondary School’s Class of 2010, he earned early recognition for his talent by representing Saint Lucia at both the Under-15 and Under-19 national levels, laying the groundwork for his long-standing presence in local cricket.
Beyond his contributions to cricket, Simon held a full-time position as a Business Development Officer at Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Commerce, where he was equally respected by colleagues and supervisors for his dedication and work ethic.
