A local man has formally apologized to Barbados’ Minister of Health Senator Lisa Cummins following a court hearing over allegations that he assaulted her and used threatening language against her. Michael Harris, the individual charged in the case, appeared before Magistrate Jared Richards at the Bridgetown Traffic Court on Tuesday to respond to the two misdemeanor counts filed against him. In a resolution that avoids a permanent criminal mark on Harris’ record, the court ruled to place him under a 3-month peace bond, with no formal conviction entered against him. The terms of the bond outline clear penalties for any violation of the court’s order: should Harris fail to abide by the requirement to keep the peace, he will be required to pay an immediate $2,000 fine or serve a one-month prison sentence for the assault charge. For the second count of using threatening words, a breach would trigger an immediate $1,500 fine or an additional one-month custodial sentence. Shortly after being processed and released from custody following the hearing, Harris spoke publicly about the incident, taking full accountability for his actions. He explained that his harmful behavior originated from overwhelming personal frustration that boiled over in the moment, but emphasized that this context does not excuse his conduct.
