Ministry’s Back-to-School Initiative Supports 1,025 Students

As a new academic year approaches, more than 1,000 students from low-income and vulnerable households have received critical school supplies through a community-focused giveaway organized by the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation via the national Social Protection Board. The one-day distribution event, hosted at the well-frequented Rising Sun Grounds this past Thursday, brought together hundreds of local parents and their school-aged children, who walked away with free essential items including backpacks, footwear, textbooks, and other core school necessities. In total, the Social Protection Board distributed 1,025 school bags – the full stock allocated for the initiative – alongside a large volume of additional supplies that were quickly claimed by attending families. Mary Baltimore, Operations Manager for the Social Protection Board, confirmed that the initiative was completed with full success, noting that targeted assistance of this kind directly eases the heavy financial strain that many families face when preparing to send their children back to school each year. Beyond easing household budgets, Baltimore emphasized that access to new, proper school supplies plays a key role in lifting children’s self-confidence and building excitement for their return to in-person learning, helping them start the academic year on a positive footing. She extended formal gratitude to all parties that contributed to the smooth execution of the giveaway, including the Board’s full staff team, event beneficiaries, members of the general public who donated supplies and time, the Board’s chairman, and all other supporting partners. This distribution event is just one component of the Ministry of Social and Urban Transformation’s ongoing, systemic efforts to support vulnerable households across the country, and to guarantee that no child starts the new school year lacking the basic tools they need to succeed in their studies.
