In a formal diplomatic ceremony held on Wednesday at Santo Domingo’s National Palace, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader formally accepted the credentials of nine newly appointed ambassadors representing nations from four continents. The event, which drew senior government leadership including Vice President Raquel Peña and Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, marks a key step forward for the Caribbean nation’s efforts to expand and deepen its global diplomatic and economic partnerships.
The nine incoming ambassadors hail from South Korea, Honduras, Canada, Israel, Chile, Indonesia, Pakistan, Slovenia and Jordan, each bringing decades of specialized international experience to their new posts in the Dominican Republic. Among the most notable appointees is South Korea’s Bae Jin Lima, a veteran career diplomat who has already held postings across Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean, giving him deep regional context ahead of his tenure. Canada’s nominee Brendan Michael Sutton brings decades of senior foreign service experience, including previous assignments in Moscow and Tokyo, while Israel’s Oren Bar-El, a seasoned Latin America affairs specialist, currently serves as a special energy envoy, aligning with growing global focus on energy cooperation.
Rounding out the group of new diplomatic leaders is Chile’s Germán Antonio Becker Alvear, who previously served as ambassador to Panama; Indonesia’s Simon Djatwoko Irwantoro Soekarno, a senior official who has held multiple leadership roles within Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Pakistan’s Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, a diplomat with more than three decades of global foreign policy experience. Slovenia’s Andrej Medica, currently chief of staff at Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, also presented his credentials, while Jordan’s Walid Khalid Abdullah Obeidat, a career diplomat who currently holds a post as Jordan’s ambassador to the United Nations in New York, completed the cohort of incoming representatives.
Diplomatic analysts frame this credentials ceremony as a strategically significant moment for the Dominican Republic, which has increasingly prioritized expanding its diplomatic and commercial connections across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the broader Americas region. All nine new ambassadors bring specialized expertise across critical areas including foreign affairs management, international trade, multilateral organization cooperation and regional development collaboration. Officials across both the Dominican Republic and the ambassadors’ home countries expect the arrival of the new diplomatic delegations will unlock new opportunities for expanded bilateral cooperation, increased trade volume, and people-to-people exchanges in the coming years.
