As the Saint Lucia Kings navigate an up-and-down Caribbean Premier League campaign under head coach Daren Sammy, the country’s top sports official is showering praise on local supporters who have stood by the young squad through its early-season struggles. Speaking to reporters ahead of a weekly cabinet meeting Monday, Minister for Education and Sports Kenson Casimir highlighted the enduring enthusiasm of fans, noting that their willingness to invest hard-earned income into match tickets stands as a powerful marker of growing sports culture in the nation.
“Across the first four matches of the season, consistency has eluded our Saint Lucia Kings, but I cannot overstate how impressed I am with the outpouring of support from the Saint Lucian public,” Casimir told the press corps. Going on record, he added that over his five years in public office, this current campaign has seen the lowest number of requests for free complimentary match tickets — a shift he calls a clear sign of progress for local sports.
According to Casimir, the trend demonstrates that the country is moving in the right direction, with local residents increasingly recognizing the value of backing domestic sports and taking advantage of world-class local event facilities. “The small entry fee charged for tickets pales in comparison to the electric atmosphere and unmatched excitement fans get to experience, particularly in the Johnson Charles Stand,” he explained. “It is well worth every dollar spent.”
Casimir closed his remarks by extending a full commendation to the Saint Lucian public for their consistent crowd turnout and energy. “There is a genuine palpable excitement building around grassroots and elite sports development across this country, and the strong turnout we have seen at Kings matches this season is living proof of that momentum,” he said.
Heading into the final stretch of the team’s home leg of the tournament, the Saint Lucia Kings hold a middling 50% win record, with two victories and two losses from their opening four outings. The squad is now gearing up for two critical home matches this week, aiming to close out their home schedule on a positive note. First, they will face off against the hard-hitting Guyana Amazon Warriors on Wednesday, before taking on the Jamaica Kingsmen this coming Friday.
