Resident Calls on Antigua and Barbuda Public Works to Remove Loose Gravel After Fall

A local resident is pressing government infrastructure officials to address a long-unresolved walking hazard along a busy municipal street, after a nasty fall on loose loose stone left her with multiple lasting injuries over the weekend.

The incident unfolded Saturday morning near Shoul’s Toys and Gifts, a popular retail outlet on Newgate Street, when the unidentified woman stepped onto an uneven patch of loose gravel and lost her balance. In an interview following the accident, she detailed the range of harm she sustained: deep bruising across both knees and one hand, a soft tissue injury to the facial area beneath one eye, plus persistent symptoms including swelling across multiple muscle groups, generalized body aches, and spells of dizziness that have continued since the fall.

Beyond seeking medical attention for her own injuries, the resident is now calling on the Ministry of Public Works, the government body responsible for maintaining public roadway and pedestrian infrastructure in the area, to undertake immediate clearing of the scattered loose gravel along the stretch of street. She issued a sharp warning that without swift intervention, the hazard remains in place and could easily cause the same or even worse harm to other pedestrians passing through the area.

“Y’all need to do something about those loose gravel, Public Works,” the resident emphasized in her public appeal, stressing that the preventable hazard poses an ongoing risk to everyone walking along Newgate Street, from local shoppers to commuters and children visiting nearby businesses.
