Barbados ‘On the Road to 60’ at World Travel Market

Barbados formally inaugurated its participation in the 2026 World Travel Market (WTM) on a Monday evening, hosting a high-profile ministerial reception at London’s JW Marriott Grosvenor House to lay the groundwork for a week of productive industry engagement. Titled “On the Road to 60”, the celebratory event marks two landmark milestones for the Caribbean nation: its upcoming 60th anniversary of national independence, and five years since its transition to a parliamentary republic. The guest list gathered leading figures across the global tourism ecosystem, including international media partners, seasoned travel agents, and top-tier sector stakeholders.

Delivering the keynote address, Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport, The Hon. Ian Gooding-Edghill, framed the island’s WTM attendance as a deliberate step to deepen cross-sector partnerships and elevate the overall visitor experience for travelers. “We arrive at WTM with unshakable confidence in everything Barbados has to offer, and a clear, non-negotiable responsibility to keep earning the trust of every traveler who chooses our shores,” the minister stated. “Your partnerships are the backbone of that mission, and tonight we are here to outline exactly what that shared future holds for all of us.”

WTM 2026, running November 3 to 5 at London’s ExCeL exhibition center, ranks among the world’s most influential annual travel industry gatherings, uniting thousands of cross-sector participants spanning airlines, media outlets, tour operators, and destination management organizations under one roof. Barbados’ prominent presence at the event underscores its sustained, multi-million dollar investment in tourism infrastructure, and the enduring, mutually beneficial ties it shares with the UK market – long recognized as a cornerstone of the island’s international tourism performance.

“The UK occupies an irreplaceable, special place in our global tourism strategy,” Minister Gooding-Edghill added. “Your deep understanding of consumer preferences, and the unwavering confidence you place in our destination, directly drive the repeat loyalty that defines our success.”

Adding a memorable, eye-catching focal point to the reception, a custom-branded London taxi wrapped in the island’s new “Barbados Remembers Your Name” campaign pulled up outside the venue, drawing widespread delight from attendees and serving as a tangible symbol of Barbados’ world-famous, personal approach to hospitality. Though the nationwide campaign first launched in September, the vividly decorated taxi acted as a moving reminder of the small, personal connections that keep generations of visitors returning to the island year after year.

“That deep, enduring loyalty is not built on sand or palm trees alone – it is built on our people: the frontline hotel staff who remembers a returning guest’s favorite drink, the local taxi driver who becomes a trusted friend over decades of visits, the small restaurant owner who makes an entire family feel like they are coming home,” Minister Gooding-Edghill explained. “These are the people who give Barbados its unmatched warmth and distinct character.”

The minister went on to outline a slate of transformative new tourism developments set to roll out across the island in the coming years, including a pipeline of new luxury hotel openings, an expanded calendar of curated cultural, culinary, and sporting events, and a series of major airlift expansions with two leading UK carriers, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

For 2026, British Airways has already expanded its Barbados service, operating daily flights from London Gatwick in addition to its existing daily Heathrow route. During the peak winter travel window from December through March, the carrier will run a total of three daily flights from London to Bridgetown. Looking ahead to 2027, British Airways plans to more than double its summer capacity for the Barbados route, running daily services from both Heathrow and Gatwick to support year-round travel demand. The expanded flight network is projected to add more than 120,000 extra annual seats between the UK and Barbados, with winter season capacity rising by roughly 70%. These new routes complement Virgin Atlantic’s current double-daily Heathrow to Barbados service this winter, as well as its new seasonal Manchester route operating up to four flights per week, all designed to reduce seasonal tourism volatility and attract off-peak visitors outside of the traditional winter holiday window.

A host of high-profile Barbadian public and industry figures joined the reception, including Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association Chief Executive Officer Senator Ryan Forde, Barbados Port Inc Chairman The Most Honourable Peter Odle, legendary Barbados cricket icon The Most Honourable Joel Garner, and a full delegation of senior leaders from the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI). BTMI CEO Andrea Franklin delivered opening remarks welcoming guests, emphasizing that long-standing industry partnerships are the core of the island’s global success. “You help curious travelers discover our island, remove barriers to make their journeys easier, and give them countless reasons to come back again and again,” Franklin said. “We deeply value those relationships, and we want every one of you to know how much we appreciate the work you do on our behalf.” BTMI UK Director Elan Mottley Harris echoed that sentiment, celebrating the decades of close cultural and commercial bonds between Barbados and the UK. “For so many British travelers, a trip to Barbados does not feel like visiting a foreign country – it feels like coming back to people who know you,” Mottley Harris noted. “That level of loyalty speaks volumes, and it is something we never, ever take for granted.”

Despite the crisp, frigid November temperatures outside the venue, the reception space radiated the signature warmth of Barbadian culture, filled with lively local entertainment and authentic island hospitality. Guests were greeted by beloved local cultural icons Motha Sally and the Bajan Shaggy Bear, and treated to live performances from the Bajan Voices vocal group, who performed beloved local classics including The Merrymen’s iconic hit *Beautiful Barbados*. The island’s world-renowned culinary scene was also on full display: Chef Jason Howard, selected as one of Barbados’ official Culinary Ambassadors for WTM 2026, served a spread of gourmet, authentic Bajan dishes, while celebrated local mixologist David Barker crafted custom rum-forward cocktails and non-alcoholic mocktails inspired by Barbadian flavors, adding an extra layer of island flair to the evening’s festivities. Overall, Barbados’ robust, multi-faceted presence at WTM 2026 reaffirms its global status as a premium long-haul travel destination, fully dedicated to delivering exceptional visitor experiences and forging lasting, mutually beneficial partnerships across the entire global travel industry.
