On Sunday, November 1, the Independent Forum of Commonwealth Organisations (IFCO) hosted a high-profile welcome reception at the headquarters of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, drawing nearly 100 delegates representing formally accredited groups across the 56-nation Commonwealth bloc. Convened as a pre-summit gathering ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the event was designed to deepen cross-stakeholder bonds and lay the groundwork for constructive, solution-focused dialogue across diverse civil society, academic and professional networks. Host nation representative Counsellor and Advocate Koren Norton extended a warm official welcome to the international cohort, emphasizing that bringing together organizations operating across disparate sectors and national jurisdictions is a critical step to unlocking collective impact for shared Commonwealth priorities. “We were thrilled to open our doors to these distinguished colleagues from every corner of the globe, who deliver transformative, life-changing work in their respective fields, to kick off intentional conversations about building long-lasting, sustainable partnerships that leave no community behind,” Norton shared. IFCO Chair David N. Jones framed the reception as a pivotal, accessible networking platform that fills a key gap for accredited Commonwealth groups, many of which operate in isolated regional contexts with limited opportunities to connect with peer entities working on parallel issues. “This gathering delivered a much-needed space for connection for the full breadth of accredited organizations operating across the Commonwealth, anchored by the incredible hospitality and warm welcome from our Antiguan hosts,” Jones noted. David Massiah, General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union, also delivered formal opening remarks to extend greetings and express support for the collaborative goals of the assembly. Delegates in attendance represented a broad cross-section of professional associations, higher education institutions, and grassroots civil society groups, with breakout discussions spanning high-priority themes including equitable education access, inclusive youth leadership, vocational skills development, and organizational capacity building for under-resourced community groups. As a voluntary umbrella body, IFCO currently represents more than 103 formally accredited Commonwealth organizations spanning sectors from public health, legal reform, and education to professional development, human rights, disability advocacy, and grassroots civil society organizing. The core mandate of the network is to facilitate mutual peer support and streamline collaborative action across its member groups and the broader Commonwealth institutional ecosystem.
