Eden Lodge, Good Shepherd remain closed as odour source still unknown

A puzzling, chemical-like stench that forced operational disruptions at Eden Lodge Primary School in Barbados last week has yet to be traced to its origin, prompting education authorities to extend the temporary shutdown of the facility indefinitely, alongside the segment of Good Shepherd Primary School that shares the same campus. The Ministry of Education Transformation released a public update on Sunday, confirming that investigative teams are now expanding their search beyond the school grounds into the adjacent local neighbourhood, after exhaustive on-site checks failed to pinpoint the source of the unusual scent. Last week, specialized technical teams from the Barbados Fire Service and the Barbados National Oil Company were deployed to conduct comprehensive gas detection sweeps across the entire school compound, with all tests returning negative results for hazardous gas presence; officials also confirmed the campus has no active gas supply infrastructure, ruling out a standard utility leak as a potential cause. The education ministry stated it is now collaborating closely with teams from the Ministry of Health and Wellness to run targeted environmental sampling and testing, in a bid to characterize the odour and identify its root cause. As a strict precautionary measure to safeguard the health of students, teaching staff and school personnel, both school sites will remain fully closed until further official notification. The ministry pledged to communicate all test findings and updates directly to parents, guardians, and school staff as soon as verified results are available.
