In a standout Concacaf Nations League fixture hosted at Barbados’ Wildey Astroturf on Friday, Saint Lucia’s senior men’s national football team delivered a commanding 3-0 shutout win over Guadeloupe, marking their second convincing victory of the tournament and their first clean sheet of this campaign.
Head coach Rajesh Latchoo made a predictable adjustment to his starting 11 ahead of kickoff, handing a competitive debut to Donovan “Gusto” Phillip in place of Ajani Louis. Phillip, who notched a goal in a friendly against Azerbaijan earlier this year, would go on to cap his first competitive start with a goal, rewarding his manager’s faith.
From the opening whistle, Saint Lucia looked the sharper, more energetic side, buoyed by a small but vocal group of supporters cheering from the sidelines. Their consistent offensive pressure eventually broke through in the 17th minute, following a pair of corner kicks that shifted the momentum irreversibly.
It all began two minutes earlier, when winger Arkell Jude-Boyd earned Saint Lucia’s first corner of the match. Kurt Frederick’s in-swinging delivery skimmed across the face of goal, only for a Guadeloupe defender to block the cross with an outstretched hand. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.
Stepping up to take the spot kick, Caniggia Elva – who had not played international football for 12 years ahead of this fixture – powered a low, hard strike into the left corner beyond the Guadeloupe goalkeeper’s reach to put the Piton Boyz ahead. The goal marked Elva’s eighth international strike in just 17 senior appearances, and his second career goal against Guadeloupe.
Just a minute after opening the scoring, Saint Lucia doubled their advantage from another Frederick corner. The set piece bounced through the penalty area before landing at the feet of Kegan Caull, who scored a hat-trick in Saint Lucia’s previous Nations League match. The 22-year-old dribbled past two Guadeloupe defenders to reach the edge of the six-yard box, then poked a cross back across goal for Jude-Boyd to slot home the easiest of finishes.
The scoring was completed before half-time by Phillip, the debutant forward plying his trade with the Colorado Rapids. Phillip played a perfectly weighted pass to send Caull sprinting down the left touchline, then burst into the penalty area to meet the resulting cross with a looping, clinical header past the wrong-footed goalkeeper.
After a dominant first half, the second half saw little action from either side, as both teams conserved energy ahead of their rematch scheduled for Monday at the same Wildey Astroturf venue. Saint Lucia held the majority of possession in the first 45 minutes, and finished the match with just over 50% of total ball possession.
The three points lift Saint Lucia to the top of their group early in the competition, with six points from two matches. Guadeloupe and hosts Barbados trail on four points apiece, with Barbados yet to play their Friday fixture against bottom-placed Bermuda at the time of this result.
This is not the first time Saint Lucia has found themselves leading their group early in a Concacaf Nations League cycle: the side led their group in both the 2023 and 2024 tournaments, only to drop critical points in later matches and slip down the standings. Most notably, the Piton Boyz beat Guadeloupe 2-1 in the first leg of their 2023 matchup, before suffering a 2-0 defeat in the return leg that derailed their progression. Coach Latchoo and his squad are fully aware of this history, and will be determined to avoid repeating past mistakes when they face Guadeloupe again on Monday.
