On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, two nations separated by thousands of miles have taken a landmark step to deepen bilateral connections: the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of Azerbaijan have signed two reciprocal visa waiver agreements that eliminate travel visa requirements for every category of passport holder from both countries.
The historic signing was completed on September 24, 2026, by the top diplomatic leaders of both states. Representing St. Kitts and Nevis was Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, while Azerbaijan’s delegation was led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov. Immediately following the signing ceremony, both ministers shared the milestone with global audiences via their personal social media channels.
In his post announcing the agreement, Douglas emphasized that the new pacts do more than ease cross-border travel. “Saint Kitts and Nevis and Azerbaijan have signed a visa waiver agreement covering all passport categories, strengthening diplomatic ties and making travel easier for citizens of both countries,” he wrote.
Bayramov echoed that positive sentiment, noting the productive meeting held alongside UNGA proceedings. “These signed documents mark an important step in enhancing our bilateral relations and encouraging closer exchanges between our peoples,” he added.
The two separate agreements are structured to cover all passport types issued by both governments: one agreement establishes mutual visa exemption for holders of diplomatic, official, and service passports, while the second extends the same benefit to holders of ordinary passports. Combined, the pacts remove visa barriers for every citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis and Azerbaijan who holds a valid national passport.
According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the signing capped off constructive bilateral talks between the two ministers, where the pair reviewed the current state of diplomatic ties and laid out priorities for future cooperation. A core stated goal of the agreements is to expand people-to-people connections between the Caribbean and South Caucasus nations, creating new opportunities for cultural exchange, business cooperation, tourism, and personal travel.
The visa waiver deal continues a recent trend of diplomatic outreach for both states. St. Kitts and Nevis has concluded a string of similar visa-free travel agreements with countries across the globe in recent years, while Azerbaijan has also prioritized expanding its visa-free access network, signing multiple comparable pacts with other nations in conjunction with this year’s UN General Assembly gathering.
