In a high-stakes Caribbean Premier League (CPL) clash at Bridgetown’s Kensington Oval on Thursday, the Barbados Tridents pulled off a season-defining four-wicket victory over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, keeping their knockout stage aspirations alive while crushing those of their opponents.
The result reshuffled the CPL standings dramatically, lifting the Tridents from the bottom of the table to fourth place with eight accumulated points – the final position needed to secure a playoff spot. For the Patriots, however, the defeat brought an early end to their 2024 campaign, eliminating any chance of progressing to the knockout rounds.
The Patriots’ day got off to a disastrous start after captain Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Johnson Charles and Kyle Mayers both fell for second-ball ducks, and Andre Fletcher followed back to the pavilion just four runs later, leaving the side reeling at 3 wickets for 6 runs. By the end of the mandatory Power Play, the Patriots had crawled to 21 runs for the loss of three wickets, and their situation worsened in the 11th over when Tridents skipper Chris Green removed Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka for 6, moving the score to 51 for 5.
Green, who would go on to claim Player-of-the-Match honors, finished his spell with outstanding figures of 4 wickets for just 20 runs. Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga injected late momentum with a blistering 45 off 25 deliveries, and Holder chipped in with 24, but the early top-order collapse proved insurmountable. The Patriots were bowled out for 118 on the final ball of their 20-over innings. Daniel Sams picked up 2 wickets for 21 runs, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie claimed 2 for 30, and Jakeem Pollard turned in an economical, wicketless spell of 4 overs that conceded only 17 runs.
Chasing a modest 119 to win, the Tridents hit their own early rough patch, losing three wickets during the Power Play to leave them 38 for 3. Brandon King was out for a duck, Rivaldo Clarke added just 4, and Zachary Carter made 13 before falling. By the 11th over, the Tridents were 65 for 4 after Shadrack Descarte was dismissed for 19, setting up a pivotal partnership between South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock and all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford that steadied the innings.
Rutherford was out for 23 off 17 deliveries, but de Kock held firm to finish unbeaten on 44 from 43 balls, including two fours and two towering sixes. The Tridents crossed the finish line in the 18th over, reaching 120 for 6 to secure the win. For the Patriots, Holder turned in a strong all-round performance with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 31 runs, while Pakistani fast bowler Naseem Shah claimed 2 wickets for just 11 runs.
Speaking after the match, Green emphasized that the result mattered far more than his individual accolade. “It was nice to get some wickets and contribute, but I think most importantly (was) getting the win and pushing us one step closer to qualifying and achieving our goal of having home finals,” he said.
Green highlighted the Tridents’ consistent bowling performance across their recent home fixtures as the key to their late-season form. “I think the consistent factor in the three home games has been our bowling performance. It’s been different bowlers stepping up at crucial times. We’ve got a really good blueprint that’s been successful at home here (and) hopefully, we can keep that going.”
The skipper added that he is optimistic about the team’s growth ahead of their next fixture, noting that the side is yet to hit its full peak despite their recent winning run.
For Patriots captain Holder, the result marked a second consecutive season of falling short of playoff qualification, leaving him disappointed with the campaign’s outcome. “Obviously, we’re disappointed. We thought we had a pretty good team this year, but we didn’t live up to our expectations. I think all in all, we had a few games to win, which we didn’t win,” he said.
“My last two seasons here, it’s pretty much the same story. We came close, but we haven’t quite gotten over the line. I think on reflection for the franchise, we’ve really got to look at some ways to get over the line,” he added.
The Tridents will continue their push for a confirmed playoff spot when they face the Jamaica Tallawahs (Jamaica Kings) in another key fixture at Kensington Oval this Saturday, September 12.
