A fatal worksite accident that claimed the life of a 49-year-old San Ignacio resident has raised new questions about liability and workplace safety in western Belize’s Cayo District, as local firm Bulridge Limited moves to distance itself from the incident.
Mauricio Solis, the victim, died on September 3 while on assignment near Guacamayo Bridge in the Mountain Pine Ridge area. According to a statement from Bulridge, Solis was accompanying a third-party private contractor to a pre-approved worksite when the deadly machinery failure occurred. The company has emphasized that all heavy equipment involved in the incident – including a dump truck, towing trailer and backhoe – is owned by Bahadur Trucking and Backhoe Service, and no Bulridge personnel were operating the machinery at the time of the crash.
As official investigations move forward, Belizean police have released new detailed accounts of what led to Solis’s death, shared by Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith, a staff officer with the police force.
“Initial investigation found that Solis was riding in the dump truck as it towed a trailer carrying a grader, which was positioned across the trailer’s bed,” Smith explained in an official briefing. “When the driver attempted to ascend a steep hill, the truck suffered sudden mechanical failure that left it unable to maintain forward momentum, and it began rolling backward down the slope. The driver quickly lost full control of the vehicle, which eventually overturned.”
During the rollover, Smith confirmed, Solis was thrown from the truck’s cabin and became trapped underneath the vehicle’s frame. He suffered catastrophic, life-threatening injuries in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene. First responders and law enforcement have already processed the crash site to collect evidence, and a formal investigation into the contributing factors of the accident is now ongoing.
“An official case file is currently being compiled by our team,” Smith added. “Once all evidence and witness statements are gathered and the file is finalized, it will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further legal direction.”
