After skies cleared and the sun broke through, crowds flooded into the playing field in droves, ready to cheer on their neighbors and take part in the day’s planned activities. Young competitors from Park Hill, Georgetown, Byera, Colonaire, Chester Cottage, Gorse, and Owia went head-to-head in both cricket and 5-a-side football tournaments, putting on display impressive athletic talent, seamless teamwork, and exemplary sportsmanship across every match.
The newly launched Jiggy Saturday 5-A-Side Football Competition stood out as one of the day’s biggest attractions, with Shotta Corner claiming the first-ever championship title after a series of tightly contested matches. In the parallel cricket tournament, the Owia Strikers pulled off a winning performance to take home the crown as the event’s inaugural cricket champions.
For long-time Gorse residents, the gathering carried far more meaning than just a day of sport. For decades, the Gorse Playing Field had sat largely unused for organized competitive matches, leaving a gap in the community’s recreational and social life.
