The tight-knit media fraternity across Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean is grieving the loss of one of its most respected long-serving professionals, veteran broadcaster and communications expert Marcella André.
André’s journey in the region began with an early life upheaval. Born on the island of Dominica, her family was forced to relocate when Hurricane David tore through the Caribbean in 1979, when she was still a child. The family resettled in Antigua, and decades later, André turned that formative experience of displacement into a powerful reflection for audiences at her TEDxAntigua talk, which she titled *Displacement Breeds Discovery*.
Her career in broadcasting first took root back in Dominica in the 1990s, before she went on to build her legacy in Antigua and Barbuda’s media landscape, where she worked for more than 15 years. It was through her contributions to the Observer Media Group and its flagship Observer Radio that André became a widely recognized and beloved voice across the country.
Beyond her on-air work, André dedicated much of her energy to lifting up the next generation of industry professionals. She was deeply passionate about mentorship and advancing professional development, with a particular focus on creating opportunities for women and young people. In 2020, she joined forces with colleagues to co-found the NIA Mentor Award, a program that combines financial grants with one-on-one guidance to support emerging female entrepreneurs.
André’s influence also extended into the regional arts community: she served as Antigua and Barbuda’s country director for the Caribbean Performing Arts Federation, helping to grow and promote creative work across the region.
Today, colleagues and peers remember André for many things: her instantly recognizable one-of-a-kind voice, her unshakable confidence, and her unwavering dedication to upholding high standards of excellence across her work. She leaves behind a deep, enduring legacy that continues to shape media and communications professionals across the entire Caribbean.
