A quiet Wednesday morning on Belize’s Philip Goldson Highway turned into a devastating double tragedy that has left two local families reeling from sudden, unthinkable loss. In the first incident, a collision between a motorcycle carrying a Belizean couple and a BMW near the Mile Five marker left 32-year-old Joseph Williams and 42-year-old Sherlene Rodriguez dead. The BMW operator, 22-year-old Pedro Espat, was unharmed in the crash, according to initial official reports.
Williams was rushed to the country’s primary public care facility, Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, but medics pronounced him dead immediately upon his arrival. Rodriguez, who sustained critical traumatic injuries in the crash, passed away hours later while clinicians fought to save her life.
Family members shared that the couple had only recently purchased the motorcycle, and were traveling toward Belize City on the morning of the crash to pick up new parts for the vehicle. Joy Francisco, Williams’ aunt, remembered her nephew as a consistently cautious and attentive driver who never operated vehicles at excessive speeds, whether he was driving a car or his new motorcycle.
“He was a nice person… He had his vehicle and he didn’t drive fast, he had his motorcycle, and didn’t drive fast either,” Francisco told reporters. “So, when I heard the news, it was so shocking. All I want to tell the driver is to have some respect for people on motorcycles as well, and be careful on the road.”
The pain of the sudden loss compounded for Williams’ family that same night, when unknown burglars broke into Williams’ home just hours after his death. Local law enforcement has not yet released details on potential stolen items or suspects in the burglary.
For Rodriguez’s family, the shock of the crash was amplified by how they first learned of the tragedy. Faith Flores, Rodriguez’s aunt who raised her from infancy, recalled seeing initial news of the collision posted to Facebook before realizing her own niece was one of the victims. “It was devastating,” Flores shared of the moment she confirmed the news.
As of Friday, official police updates confirmed that Espat complied with an order to provide a urine sample for alcohol and toxicology testing following the crash. Law enforcement has also issued him a formal Notice of Intended Prosecution, signaling that formal charges are pending the results of the investigation and toxicology report.
