A brutal early-morning attack has left a 30-year-old woman seriously injured after her former partner, who was already the subject of an active arrest warrant for prior domestic violence, allegedly stabbed her 26 times in the La Cidra sector of the Dominican Republic’s [unnamed] province on Friday.
The victim has been formally identified as Nayeli Altagracia Capellán, who separated from her accused attacker, Adonis de Jesús Caraballo, roughly one month prior to the assault, according to immediate family members. Even after the separation, relatives told reporters Caraballo repeatedly visited Capellán’s home, using the excuse of dropping off child support payments for the couple’s three young children to gain entry.
Capellán’s mother detailed the chain of events leading to the attack, stating Caraballo arrived at the residence around 2:00 a.m. claiming he was stopping by before heading to his workplace. After gaining entry to the property, the suspect grabbed Capellán by the hair, dragged her out to the home’s outdoor patio, and launched the fatal-seeming knife attack — all in full view of the couple’s three young daughters.
It was the couple’s eldest daughter, just 10 years old, who took quick action to call for assistance after the assault began. The young child fled the home to bang on the doors of neighboring properties, alerting local residents to the emergency unfolding. By the time neighbors arrived at the scene to intervene, however, Caraballo had already fled the area.
In a scathing rebuke of law enforcement and the accused’s family, Capellán’s relatives have denounced that a valid arrest warrant was already issued for Caraballo in connection with prior acts of violence against the victim. Capellán’s mother claims the warrant was processed through the local Prosecutor’s Office and handed over to the local police precinct — but no action was taken to take the suspect into custody ahead of Friday’s attack. She also accused Caraballo’s father, Narciso Caraballo Capellán, of hiding his son and being fully aware of the ongoing violent conflict between the pair, failing to intervene to stop further harm.
At press time, local law enforcement authorities have opened a formal investigation to map out the exact circumstances of the attack and assign official accountability for the failure to arrest the suspect prior to the assault. Capellán’s family is pushing for a full manhunt to locate Adonis de Jesús Caraballo and hold him legally responsible for the attack, calling for swift justice after the near-fatal violence.
