Providence, Guyana – A dominant seven-wicket victory over Pakistan’s Lahore Qalandars at the Guyana National Stadium has booked the San Francisco Unicorns a place in the 2026 ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) T20 qualifier, scheduled for Friday evening.
Wednesday’s group-stage result leaves both sides level on four points at the end of round-robin play, but Qalandars were pushed to fourth place in the overall standings after falling short on net run rate, eliminating them from immediate title contention. The Unicorns, who secured second place on the table, will now face third-ranked Desert Vipers in the do-or-die qualifier kicking off at 7 p.m. local time on Friday. The winner of that matchup will advance to Saturday’s championship final, where they will take on the tournament’s undefeated defending champions, the Guyana Amazon Warriors. The Warriors topped the group stage with a perfect three-win record and six points, earning an automatic bye directly to the title decider.
In Match Nine of the group stage, Lahore Qalandars won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a total of 156 runs for the loss of six wickets at the end of their 20 overs. The innings got off to a strong start, with prolific opening batter Shayan Jahangir notching his second half-century of the tournament, a blistering 61 runs off 50 deliveries. Jahangir’s knock included four sixes and two boundaries, and he received valuable support from opening partner Shamyl Hossain, who chipped in with 36 runs to build an early solid platform.
However, a devastating late spell from left-arm Unicorns spinner Callum Stow derailed Qalandars’ run buildup. Stow collected four of the six wickets to fall in the innings, finishing with spectacular match-winning figures of four wickets for just 25 runs across his four overs. His collapse of the middle order saw Mohammad Naeem (18), Parvez Hossain Emon (9), and Qalandars captain Michael Bracewell (10) all back in the pavilion in quick succession, capping the innings well before the side could post a more challenging total. Chasing a modest 153 runs for victory, the Unicorns got off to a steady, confident start, with openers Connor Esterhuizen and Tim Robinson putting together a 45-run opening stand to set up the chase. Esterhuizen contributed 29 runs to the partnership, while Robinson added 21, putting the Unicorns well on track from the opening overs.
Unicorns captain Hassan Khan led the run chase from the middle order, finishing unbeaten on a responsible 53 runs off just 33 deliveries to guide his side over the line. Khan’s knock included five towering sixes and two boundaries, keeping the scoreboard ticking at a rapid pace throughout the chase. Khan shared a 49-run partnership with Oliver Peake that maintained the team’s momentum, until Peake was bowled by Shamim Hossain for 27 runs in the 12th over with the Unicorns on 116 runs for three wickets. All-rounder Hammad Azam finished the job alongside Khan, hitting an unbeaten 18 runs that included two fours and a six, to seal the win with 28 overs remaining. The result marks a key milestone for the Unicorns, keeping their 2026 GSL title hopes alive ahead of Friday’s qualifier.
