The Guyana Amazon Warriors and the ExxonMobil Guyana Global Super League (GSL) have announced a landmark commitment: 100% of all ticket revenue generated from the 2026 GSL final will be directed toward educational programs and humanitarian aid for families and individuals impacted by the sinking of the MV Barima.
The tragedy unfolded on the night of July 18, 2026, when the MV Barima, an aging 87-year-old state-owned passenger and cargo ferry, departed the capital city of Georgetown. Roughly two hours after midnight, the vessel capsized and sank in open waters between 7 and 9 miles off Essequibo coast, close to the small coastal outpost of Iron Punt. Accounts from survivors confirm the ship began listing severely several hours before it went down, with large, rough swells accelerating the influx of water that ultimately sealed the vessel’s fate. As of the latest official updates, 65 people have been confirmed dead in the disaster, leaving dozens of families grieving and facing immense uncertainty.
