A large-scale multi-agency search and rescue operation is ongoing in Guyana’s Northwest District after the passenger ferry MV Barima issued an emergency distress signal late Saturday while en route to Port Kaituma. Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill confirmed details of the incident, stating the vessel departed its starting point at approximately 3:15 p.m. local time carrying 116 passengers and crew. The Timheri Control Tower received the distress call at 11:01 p.m. local time, and emergency response protocols were activated immediately.
To date, the operation has brought together government agencies and private sector stakeholders in a coordinated effort to locate the remaining missing people. According to official safety records, the MV Barima was fully compliant with regional maritime safety requirements, equipped with 250 life jackets and six inflatable lifeboats. Air and sea units from Guyana’s Regions Two and Three have been deployed to expand search coverage, while medical teams have been stationed onboard rescue vessels, with a government aircraft converted into a floating mobile medical hub to provide urgent care for recovered survivors.

President Irfaan Ali, who is currently outside of Guyana’s jurisdiction, issued a statement expressing profound concern over the vessel’s capsizing. “I am deeply affected by the capsizing of the MV Barima last night. Even though I am currently out of the country, I remain in constant contact with the prime minister, and the entire cabinet is fully engaged in the national response to this incident,” Ali said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the passengers, crew and their families. Their safety is our number one priority right now.”
