Across Antigua and Barbuda, underserved school-aged children from vulnerable backgrounds are poised to receive life-changing support through a groundbreaking community initiative launched by the Kiwanis Club of Antigua AR Fusion. Titled the Bright Eyes project, the program made its official debut over the past weekend, and has already delivered critical comprehensive eye health screenings and custom prescription eyeglasses to a number of local students in need.
Bright Eyes is designed as an extension of the Kiwanis Club’s existing community program, Bright Minds, which focuses on boosting educational outcomes for local youth. By targeting unaddressed vision impairments, the new initiative seeks to remove a hidden barrier to learning, giving children the clear sight they need to excel in the classroom and pursue their long-term goals.
The project is being delivered through a strategic partnership with Dr. Salem Zreibi, a leading optometry professional at Progressive Vision, and formal collaboration with the Student Support Unit under Antigua and Barbuda’s Ministry of Education. Under the program’s terms, the Kiwanis Club and Dr. Zreibi have jointly committed to covering the full cost of comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses for 20 eligible vulnerable students, with each student receiving up to EC$600 in care. This brings the total project budget to EC$12,000, all invested directly in supporting youth health and education.
Dr. Zreibi shared that Progressive Vision is deeply honored to join forces with the Kiwanis Club of Antigua AR Fusion for this effort, noting that nearly every core activity students engage in daily depends on healthy vision. From reading textbooks and writing assignments to copying lesson notes from classroom whiteboards, distinguishing learning materials, and joining recess and team sports, clear eyesight is a non-negotiable foundation for student success. He added that what sets Bright Eyes apart from routine school vision screenings is its commitment to full, wrap-around care: rather than just flagging potential vision issues, the program provides complete diagnostic exams and delivers customized prescription glasses to students in the fastest possible timeline.
Leadership at the Kiwanis Club of Antigua AR Fusion emphasize that uncorrected vision impairment is a widely overlooked issue in many communities, one that creates persistent, unnecessary barriers that hold children back from learning, growing and reaching their full potential. The organization has made it a core priority to remove this specific obstacle through targeted initiatives that improve children’s vision health, and in turn, open up new opportunities for their long-term futures.
Oslyn, President of the Kiwanis Club of Antigua AR Fusion, spoke to the meaningful impact of the work in an interview, saying, “This initiative brings a tremendous sense of accomplishment to our entire team. Our collaboration with Progressive Vision has allowed us to step in and address a critical unmet need in our community, and directly give children the opportunity to see more clearly and build a brighter future for themselves. That is why every one of our members is so passionate about this work: we are actively creating the kind of positive change we want to see grow here in Antigua and Barbuda.”
The club has extended formal sincere gratitude to Dr. Zreibi and the entire team at Progressive Vision for their generosity, collaborative spirit, and shared commitment to lifting up the lives of young people through this impactful community project. Moving forward, project organizers expect Bright Eyes to deliver lasting, transformative change for participating students, ensuring that vulnerable youth have access to the high-quality vision care they need to thrive both academically and socially.
