Policeman charged with Cuban woman’s murder remanded to prison

In a criminal proceeding held in Guyana on Monday, June 29, 2026, a 20-year-old serving police officer has been formally arraigned on a single count of murder in connection with the death of a 26-year-old Cuban national, local law enforcement confirmed in an official public statement.

The accused, identified as Randy Thomas, a resident of Mahaica on Guyana’s East Coast Demerara, stands accused of killing Dailen Paneque Gomez, the Cuban victim who resided in the nearby Mon Repos neighborhood, also located along East Coast Demerara. Investigative records indicate the fatal incident is alleged to have occurred at a location in Enmore South, East Coast Demerara, sometime between June 18 and June 24 of this year.

The arraignment took place at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where presiding Magistrate Teriq Mohamed formally read the murder charge aloud to Thomas. As the charge against Thomas is classified as an indictable offense under Guyana’s criminal procedure rules, the defendant was not required to enter a formal plea during this initial court appearance.

Following the reading of the charge, Magistrate Mohamed ordered Thomas to be remanded into state custody, where he will remain until his next scheduled court date on July 21, 2026. The case marks a rare high-profile criminal matter involving an active-duty law enforcement officer facing a murder charge in Guyana, with further procedural developments expected at the next hearing.
