The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) convened its second annual Diaspora Celebration in Manhattan, bestowing recognition upon a distinguished group of individuals whose unwavering commitment has profoundly elevated the twin-island nation’s profile across the United States. The ceremony highlighted the indispensable role of diaspora members and long-standing partners in advancing the nation’s tourism and cultural outreach.
Presiding over the event was the Hon. Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation, and Investment. He was joined by key figures including Dean Fenton, ABTA Director of Tourism for the USA, and Michelle Lightfoot, Consular Officer from the Antigua and Barbuda Consulate General in New York. The gathering served to applaud those whose behind-the-scenes endeavors ensure the destination is represented with exceptional professionalism and authentic Caribbean warmth.
Among the celebrated honorees was Grammy-nominated icon Kathy Sledge, a founding member of Sister Sledge and an ambassador for the Halo Foundation. Sledge was commended for her sustained advocacy and support for charitable initiatives within Antiguan and Barbudan communities.
The event further acknowledged the contributions of Tabassum ‘Mr. Tabs’ Qureshi, proprietor of Ann’s Car and Limo Service, for his reliable transportation services for dignitaries; and veteran steelpan musician Patrick ‘Johnny’ Gomes, founder of the City South Steel Orchestra, for enriching ABTA events with vibrant Caribbean melodies for decades.
Additional accolades were presented to Kim Essen, Business Development Manager for the West Coast, for her dedicated support predating her official role; Sandra Reid, an administrative executive formerly with the Department of Tourism, for her pivotal work in facilitating tourism initiatives; and Ashton ‘Junior’ Gregory, for his indispensable logistical support for ABTA operations in New York.
In his address, Minister Fernandez articulated that tourism’s foundation extends beyond pristine beaches to the dedication of its advocates. “These honorees have become part of the extended family of Antigua and Barbuda,” he stated, expressing profound gratitude for their role in fortifying the nation’s US presence. Director Dean Fenton echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the destination’s success is propelled by partners who consistently exceed expectations to showcase its unique culture and hospitality.
The Authority also extended its recognition to several absent honorees, including tour operators Ted Martin and Radlie Baptiste, former ABTA manager Susan Coulton, and diplomatic attaché Jackley Peters. The event underscored ABTA’s strategic commitment to nurturing its diaspora network and strengthening the international appeal of Antigua and Barbuda’s 365 beaches, UNESCO World Heritage site, and vibrant cultural calendar.
