Nine murders recorded in St James since 2026

ST JAMES, Jamaica — Law enforcement authorities in St James Parish have reported a total of nine homicides occurring since the beginning of the current year through Thursday. The statistical update was formally presented by Deputy Superintendent Rogerick Reid, the acting operations officer for the St James police division, during the regular monthly assembly of the St James Municipal Corporation.

Despite the concerning number of violent deaths, DSP Reid emphasized that police personnel remain committed to achieving substantially reduced annual homicide statistics. “While any loss of life represents a significant concern, our strategic initiatives remain aligned with the objective of maintaining annual murder figures below fifty,” Reid stated during his address to municipal representatives.

The most recent homicide incident occurred in the Garlands district located in southern St James during the morning hours of Tuesday, February 10. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that a suspect is currently detained in connection with this case and formal charges are anticipated to be filed imminently.

Police authorities extended public gratitude to community members who provided crucial assistance leading to the swift apprehension of the suspect. This collaborative effort between residents and law enforcement exemplifies the community-oriented policing approach being implemented throughout the parish.

In parallel developments, police operations targeting illegal firearms have yielded significant results with eight weapons successfully confiscated from parish streets. The most recent seizure occurred Tuesday within the Flanker community, resulting in the recovery of two illicit firearms and the subsequent charging of one individual in possession.

DSP Reid specifically noted the cooperative behavior of the detained individual, who voluntarily surrendered to judicial proceedings rather than engaging in armed confrontation with authorities. This compliance was highlighted as a preferred model for others possessing illegal weapons to emulate.

Ongoing security operations continue across St James Parish with focused objectives of removing illegal firearms and identifying persons of interest to maintain public safety and reduce criminal activity.
