Bakery trespasser jailed for six months

A 56-year-old Barbadian man has received a six-month prison sentence after repeatedly violating a ban on entering a local bakery, a case that highlights ongoing issues with persistent trespassing affecting small business owners in the country.

Ian Tony Beckles, a resident of Free Hill, Black Rock in the parish of St Michael, appeared before the District ‘A’ Traffic Court on Monday. During the hearing, he formally pleaded guilty to a charge of trespassing: the offense stems from his entry into Bryan’s Bakery this past Saturday, in direct violation of a clear ban issued by the bakery’s owner, Francine Bryan-Quimby.

Prosecuting Sergeant Vernon Forde outlined the full scope of the issue for the court, explaining that Beckles is a well-known presence in the Baxter’s Road area where the bakery is located. Over an extended period, he has repeatedly entered the commercial premises without permission, despite repeated warnings to stay away. Fed up with the ongoing disruption, Bryan-Quimby had filed multiple formal complaints with local law enforcement, requesting that officers intervene to keep Beckles off her property.

After reviewing the details of the case and the history of repeated violations, Magistrate Jared Richards handed down the six-month custodial sentence, ordering Beckles to serve his term at Dodds Prison.
